Messengers 2: The Scarecrow (2009)

Horror     Rated R

Plot

The family man farmer John Rollins is stressed with his financial situation: the crows and the lack of irrigation are destroying his crop of corn; the bank is near closure of his mortgage; he does not have credit to fix the water pump or to buy seeds; and his marriage is in crisis and his wife Mary is giving too much attention to her friend Tommy. When John accidentally discovers a hidden compartment in the barn, he finds a creepy scarecrow but his son Michael makes him promise to destroy it. However, his neighbor Jude Weatherby visits him, gives a six-pack of beer to the abstemious John and convinces him to put the scarecrow in the cornfield. Out of the blue, the life of John changes: the crows die; the pump works again irrigating the land; and the banker responsible for the closure has an accident and dies. However, he feels that his land is possessed by something evil that is threatening his beloved family.

Acting

Norman Reedus is good in the lead role of the farmer, and Richard Riehle is good as his suspicious neighbor, and the supporting cast are fine. One major problem is that despite the real life 19 year age difference between Reedus, and Claire Holt, who plays his teenage daughter, the look very close in age, and really where not believable as father and daughter.

Gore

Some scenes of blood splatter and puncture wounds when characters are hit by a scythe, and a guy has his head knocked off when he's hit by a truck.

Sex/Nudity

A girl randomly gets nudes and feels herself up, which gets the guy watching horny, so he goes and rapes his wife. The same girl is later scene fully nude when she has sex with/rapes the guy.

Final Thoughts

A very generic direct to video sequel to the not as generic, star studded first film. Follows the basic kiler scarecrow story, but goes slower than most, only showing the scarecrow in action (which looks quite nice) for about 10 minutes. Less plot holes than the first, but also less story than the first, and none of the stars. It's better acted, directed and shot than most Scarecrow flicks, but it's also not as trashy or gory as most, but I would still recommend this over most of them, and about equal to the first one.
