Animals (2008)

Horror/Thriller     Not Rated

Plot

Syd Jarrett is an unsuspecting, down-and-out man in a washed-up hick town whose life is turned upside down when the drop-dead gorgeous Nora walks through the door of the local bar. Jarrett's passion for Nora leads him peripherally into a sub-culture of animals where he encounters Vic, a renegade whose animal instincts are stronger than his human ones. As things begin to get even worse, Jarrett realizes that his best chance for happiness, and survival, lies in his true love for Jane.

Acting

Stars "Lost"'s Naveen Andrews, and horror veterans Marc Blucas and Nicki Aycox, all of whom plays there roles well, despite Aycox playing a bit against type. Eva Amurri, whom i really like, is also featured, but I really didn't find her believable in the goody too shoes bartender role she was in, and was probably better suited for the role portrayed by Aycox.

Gore

The Werewolves are shown eating fleshing and clawing people, however there are only 2 gore scenes, and neither is very graphic.

Sex/Nudity

Aycox, despite having never before done nudity in her 10 plus year career, is naked for a large percentage of her screen time, and is in involved in multiple sex scenes, all of which show full nudity. Amurri, despite her oft-nude role in "Californication" is involved in only one sex scene, in which she manages to keep her private areas just barely covered.

Final Thoughts

Despite it's strong cast of both talented and recognizable actors, this movie bored the hell out of me. The story was decent enough, but was far to slow, and the directing/editing was pretty bad with a lot of scenes seemed randomly placed, and went unexplained. A big disappointment, which answers my questions as to how a film with a good cast, and such an in-vogue topic was relegated to a Maverick Entertainment straight to DVD release. Skip at all cost.
